Working based on vibes and luck (3)
I had... Something. I knew what I wanted to do (fuck with the player), I just had to... You know, actually do it.
The main menu had to be plain, and then I would be able to attack the player with a bunch of buttons that did not work. I was able to make the button change colour (texture, it is a texture button and I have like six variations of the sprite) and I honestly had a lot of fun with that. It was like a disco party but with a button.
Once I had funky buttons, timers, and changing texts, I tackled the next mechanic: player data. I had tried something like that in a small game before, but now I wanted to add more variables to the player profile to have little differences in dialogue and maybe other things. I tested it with... The player's choice of romance-able character.
At this point was when I decided that if I could not pick a design for the character, I would make two. The boy version (a twink) and the girl version (a milf). Depending on what you choose is the sprite that you will see, but the dialogue is mostly the same, because it is still the same program. Bro just wants to cater to the player's taste.
The player data is just an autoload. I can access the script from any scene, so I can reference the variables, and change them, and use them to do all my magic fuckery. With that I am able to track how many times the player clicked the buttons at the beginning, and some of the choices they make.
What I had to do next was make the transition between the beginning and the revelation of the game being a sentient being. I have a dialogue plugin (dialogue manager) that I have used for many of my projects and I can use it very comfortably, but before using a dialogue box I would make it like the program is just talking to you, with simple text. It makes sense to me, the dialogue box feels too character-y, and I do not want it to feel like that from the start. Just. Yeah.
Having the basic mechanics and stuff I could do meant that I could then have fun at actually creating the experience for the player.
